6 Tips for Successful Holiday Giving

It's the home stretch—that time of year when we're wrapping up business for the year and thanking those who helped make 2006 a success. Make the most of the time-honored tradition of thanking employees and referral sources for their efforts, and your customers for their business. (Yes, there's still time!)

1. Deliver the gift personally. It is certainly easier to ship your holiday gifts to your customers, and sometimes necessary, especially for out-of-state clients. But if you can, make the time to personally deliver the gift. By doing so, it makes the gift more heartfelt when presented with a smile and a handshake.
2. Make the gifts useful, long lasting. Food is popular because everyone can enjoy it, but it doesn't leave a long-lasting impression with the decision maker, especially if it's eaten up by others in the office. Be open to choosing a product that will be useful and appreciated by your customer, one that they can use for years to come.
3. Have your logo imprinted subtly. You want your clients to appreciate and use the gift. They're more likely to do this if your logo is subtly imprinted on the product. Different ways to accomplish this are the laser engraving, debossing and tone-on-tone embroidery.
4. Don't overgive. You don't want your client to question how much you spent. Even your largest client can be properly thanked without an overindulgent expense. The message you want to get across is that you appreciate their business without giving them any guilt.
5. Finish with customized packaging. The right finish to the presentation of your gift shows you have gone the extra mile for a complete look. That extra work will not be lost on your customer.
6. Make sure the gift makes sense. I was once given a salt and pepper shaker set from a supplier. It had no relation to their business; and since it was shipped to me, I was not sure why they selected it. I also didn't realize, until I spoke with my wife, how expensive the set was. However they came to their decision, the value and meaning of their gift was completely lost on me—their customer.
